The DAAD offers the following programmes:

Essay Competition
The DAAD organises an Essay Competition (Literaturwettbewerb) every year for Bachelors/Masters students studying German as a main/subsidiary subject. Students are expected to write an essay, a story or a poem in German on a specified theme. The winners can look forward to receiving a partially sponsored trip to Germany to attend a Summer Course in German.

Number of scholarships: 2
Duration: around one month (August)
The scholarship includes a fee waiver and a stipend that covers costs of accommodation, food and transport. Airfare is not included.
Students of MA German Studies may submit applications to the Department Office on the prescribed form by 31 March.

German Studies Partnership Program
Scholarships under the German Studies partnership supported by the DAAD between Freie Universität Berlin, Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Delhi
Number of scholarships: 2 MA + 1 MPhil/PhD
Duration: Three months
The scholarship includes airfare and a monthly stipend.
Students of MA German Studies may submit applications to the Department Office on the prescribed form by 31 March.

A New Passage to India
Scholarships under the programme "A New Passage to India" supported by the DAAD between Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Delhi
Number of scholarships: 5 MA + 1 MPhil/PhD
Duration: Three months
The scholarship includes airfare and a monthly stipend.
Students of MA, MPhil/PhD German Studies may submit applications to the Department Office on the prescribed form by 31 March.


Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies,
Freie Universität Berlin

Scholarships for dissertation projects on European, American, Arabic and Asian Literatures within the doctoral degree programme “Literary Studies”.
Applications should be submitted by January 31st, 2009. The programme of study will begin in October 2009.


HSS - FIGS Scholarship Programme

Joint scholarship programme of the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, Munich, Germany, and the Federation of Indo-German Societies in India, New Delhi, for research in Germany during an MPhil / PhD in India.
Number of scholarships: 2
Duration: 6 months to 1 year
The scholarship includes airfare from India to Germany and back, health insurance and a monthly maintenance and other allowances. Swiss Government Scholarships

Announcing scholarships for academic year 2009-10
Scholarships to study / do research at postgraduate, MPhil- PhD or post-doctoral level at Swiss universities
Age limit for application: 35 years
Deadline for application: 31 October 2008
Duration: 9 months (1 academic year)- extendable up to 1 more year
Scholarship amount: Swiss Fr 1920 per month (University fee is waived off for scholarship students). Scholarship recipients pay their own travel to Switzerland, but they are paid the retun ticket. The return travel is not offered if the scholarship holders extend their stay in Switzerland beyond six months after completion of their studies.
