Main areas
of research

Students wanting to pursue research at the MPhil / PhD levels are encouraged to choose a topic in one of the following areas:

Contemporary Europe and the Postcolonial World
Theory and Practice of Translation
Methodology and Practice of Foreign Language Education

Ph.D programme in French / German / Hispanic and Italian Studies

The Department offers PhD programmes in French, German, Hispanic and Italian Studies. Those interested in registering for a PhD programme should contact the Office of the Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Arts, University of Delhi, regarding registration procedure, application form etc.

All PhD students are required to complete the course work within a period of two semesters not exceeding one academic year from the time of admission. In case a student is not able to pass a course with 50% marks, the student shall be allowed to reappear in the examination within 12 months.

Students who are provisionally registered for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) will be required to take three courses spread over 2 semesters.

Applications should be submitted to the Head of the Department. The candidate will be required to appear for an interview before the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) along with his/her research proposal. The DRC may recommend the application and the name of the Supervisor who will guide the applicant in the research work. On such recommendation, the Board of Research Studies (Humanities) may, if it deems fit, approve the application.

Engaging with Texts (Literature, Foreign Language Education or Translation)

This course comprises of 100% internal assessment: Four detailed presentations in class encompassing a survey of secondary literature and theoretical analysis of the concerned literary texts- 2 in English, 2 in the concerned language - to be submitted subsequently in writing. The Course will be spread over first and second semesters and will be evaluated internally.

Ph.D.

The thesis must be a piece of research work characterized either by the discovery of new facts, or by a fresh interpretation of facts or theories. In either case, it should evince the candidate's capacity for critical examination and judgment. It must be satisfactory as far as its language and presentation are concerned.

The candidate may incorporate in her/his thesis the contents of any work which she/he may have published on the subject and shall indicate the same in the thesis. However, she/he shall not submit as her/his thesis any work for which a degree has been conferred on her/him by this or any other University.

Students shall submit their thesis within four years of provisional registration.

A six month extension for submission can be granted by the Board of Research Studies on written request by the student and recommendation of the Supervisor(s). Any extension beyond this shall require a written justification for the delay by the student and the Supervisor(s). Such extension shall require the approval of the Vice- Chancellor.

Eligibility

M.A. in the language or literature with at least 55% marks or (equivalent grade) or an equivalent Degree of a University

OR

M.A. with at least 55% marks or (equivalent grade) in Linguistics, all languages, all literatures or Social Sciences with reference to Area Studies and an Advanced Diploma in the language concerned from Delhi University or an institution recognised thereto.

Admission Procedure

Entrance Test for admission to PhD programmes in French/German/Hispanic/Italian Studies is conducted every year by NTA.

All candidates will have to pass the entrance test and Viva Voce in order to be eligible for admission.
